Make your Own Body Lotion

body-lotionStaggering prices for natural and organic lotion makes consumers think twice about getting the best kind of skin care product. Natural lotions don’t contain harmful ingredients such as parabens, colorants and artificial scents that are now being linked to breast cancer. One economical solution is to make your own body moisturizers at home.  This way, you will have the freedom on the formulation and you’ll be confident of what your family uses on their skin.  Here’s a basic formulation that you can use for your homemade lotion.

What You Need:

-          1/4 cup of beeswax pellets

-          2 -3 tablespoons of distilled water

-          ¾ cup pure oil such as coconut oil or almond oil

-          ¾ cup shea butter

-          ¼ cup olive oil

-          A pan where your Pyrex bowl or cup fits

-          20 drops of your favorite herbal essential oil for scent, such as lavender or mint

-          a jar with a lid

-          a Pyrex cup or bowl

-          electric stick blender or whisk

Step 1:  Place your coconut oil and shea butter in a bowl.  You can use the microwave to melt it but it could burn.  Take your pot and fill it with water a quarter of the way.  Then place your bowl in the pot so that the warm water will gradually melt the two ingredients.

Step 2:  When the oil and butter have melted, drop it your beeswax pellets. If you can’t find beeswax, this may be substituted with petroleum jelly. These heavy ingredients will act as the stabilizer and stop the lotion from evaporating in the air. Keep stirring the mixture until the pellets have totally melted and incorporated in the oils. Then, add your olive oil. This will add silkiness to the lotion, making it easy to apply on the skin.

Step 3: Turn off the heat and take you bowl out of the pan. Slowly, mix in your essential oil.  Water will give the mixture a lighter texture so you can add more than 2 tablespoons if you want.  Use your electric stick blender or whisk when adding the distilled water. This will also add some air into the mixture and cool it faster.

Step 4:  When the lotion is starting to lose its translucent color, pour it into a clean jar. Let it cool until the color has turned somewhat off-white to green. You can use it as soon as you notice the color change or you can pop the lid on and store it.
